Comprehensive project planning & multi-stakeholder management ensures new state of the art UTC Plymouth is ready for opening.
UTC Plymouth is a state of the art University Technical College, built on the former Parkside Community College in Devonport, Plymouth. The site has been extensively rebuilt and refurbished to accommodate the new UTC Plymouth campus.
Technology Supplies Ltd initially worked directly with the UTC Plymouth team and their primary sponsors who included Babcock International, Princess Yachts, and Plymouth City Council to come up with suitable equipment and layouts proposals to accommodate the intended curriculum. The College accommodates students aged between 14 – 19 years of age.
The school required a full turn-key package for seven workshops and a material preparation room, which were all fitted out with machinery and equipment from Technology Supplies’ comprehensive D&T range. The workshops included Heavy Engineering, CNC Plasma cutting, Milling and Routing, thermoforming, CAD/CAM, electronics, hydraulics and pneumatics.
Working with the client directly, Technology Supplies were able to listen to the needs of the school, and recommend a range of suitable equipment. We also needed to work closely with the main building contractor to ensure a suitable layout was designed and mechanical and electrical requirements were taken into consideration.
An imperative element of all our project work is to ensure that all equipment installed conforms to all current British Standards and HSE Guidelines. All required Dust and Fume extraction systems were installed and interlocked with the required machinery. This included two centralised systems and additional localised extraction units that are fully compliant with HSE 258 (controlling airborne contaminants in the workplace). A range of work benches and storage units were also supplied and installed to all workshops. On site safety familiarisation on all equipment was carried out, this also included software setup and on-site training for staff on all the CAD/CAM equipment.
The project was split into 2 separate contracts. The main contract with BAM Construction for all the fixed machinery and a separate contract from UTC Plymouth for loose tools.
The college was officially opened in September by Lord Baker. At the beginning of the project, Technology Supplies worked with the UTC Plymouth team, Stride Treglown Architect’s, and BAM Construction (Main Building Contractor) to ensure that all necessary procedures, compliance and safety measures were considered. We worked on the equipment layouts including final equipment layout drawing’s for the Architects and BAM Construction.
Once all the planning was signed off, the Technology Supplies project team procured all the equipment, and all machinery was delivered, installed and commissioned by our in-house engineers.
This turnkey operation was completed on time and on budget. Subsequently, Technology Supplies have also been in discussion with the College for providing bespoke tailored maintenance packages, to ensure that the large investment is looked after in the future.
“May I on behalf of the UTC thank Technology Supplies for their support and hard work - we couldn’t have done it without you!”
UTC Project Leader, Brian Warren
