Solar Cell Array Solar Cell Array Ref: 230-112
The solar cell array measures 20 x 7 x 6cm and has four solar cells each 5 x 3cm are arranged along the top surface with their terminals brought out to 4mm sockets arranged along the sides. The cells are rated at 0.5V 200mA each in bright sunlight and can be connected in series / parallel combinations as required using flying leads. Two screw terminals are provided or connecting to load resistors etc. The complete unit is ideal for all investigations into solar energy.

Student Polarimeter Student Polarimeter Ref: 280-233
Polarimetry (EAT Act 21) is a rewarding field of study in any Post-16 course to explore the applications of polarised light but expensive precision instruments have denied access to the topic in the past. This student polarimeter uses a monochromatic yellow LED light source and simplified construction to make the topic available for study in any laboratory. A 10cm long specimen tube contains the sugar solution under test and this is placed in the body of the apparatus above the polariser and light source. The lid contains the second polariser and has a scale on the outer edge so that as it is rotated the position for extinction can be found for different solution concentrations and the angle of rotation recorded. Everything is supplied except the d.c. power supply ( upto 10V ) and the sugar!

Resonance Tube Resonance Tube Ref: 290-110
This apparatus is ideal for all resonance investigations in air columns particularly the Salters MUS Activity 9. The main tube is 1 metre long and 50mm diameter which takes a high power sound wave generator unit plugged in to one end. The generator is driven by a standard laboratory signal generator and as the frequency is adjusted the various resonance modes are detected by increased loudness of the note. The open pipe can be studied or a variable length closed pipe can be used by inserting the piston assembly provided. By using a higher amplitude on the generator Kundt's tube investigations can be undertaken. Fine cork or polystyrene dust is distributed throughout the tube and at resonance the powder gathers at the nodes. Wavelengths can be easily measured. To get a good response a closed tube is preferable to reduce the sound levels in the laboratory while producing a measurable effect. The apparatus comes complete with two supports for the tube sound wave generator resonance tube piston assembly and full instructions.

Impulse Cue Impulse Cue Ref: 560-392
Make your students a wired up Stephen Hendry for the lesson. Suggestions for impulse studies usually involve aluminium foil covered footballs and many trailing leads etc. but snooker is a more manageable situation which can easily be studied on the bench. Our impulse cue simplifies the whole procedure. A full standard cue 120cm long is fitted with a tiny push button switch and internally wired to two 4mm sockets. Simply connect the cue to the timing gate terminals of a laboratory timer and record the contact time between cue and ball. Then measure the speed of the ball by any conventional means as it rolls along the bench. Times of 1 to 10ms are typical so a millisecond timer is just adequate. For precision studies use a PC oscilloscope which will give microsecond resolution. Supplied with snooker ball.
