Rotating Fields Kit Rotating Fields Kit Ref: 260-708
Used in conjunction with the Linear Fields kit this covers the work on rotating fields. A custom made moulded base supports the coils while a pivot assembly supports the rotating coils and aluminium can. A very low speed motorised magnet provides the rotating field. All the components and assemblies are matched to provide easy working experiments and demonstrations up to 260D plus 350E. If you don’t have a Phase Shifter unit this should also be purchased (260-704). The set of 5 additional 1100 turn coils (260-714) adds to the versatility of the experiments but are not essential.

Bimorph Sensor Plates Bimorph Sensor Plates Ref: 260-640
This set comprises 2 thin plastic plates and a hardboard plate each measuring 8cm square with bimorph sensors attached to each. In use the plates are attached to a vibration transducer and the output of the sensor monitored on an oscilloscope. The bimorph elements generate an output linked to the vibration and the different properties of the three plates can be studied for various frequencies.

Hardness Tester Hardness Tester Ref: 260-641
The hardness of metals, plastics and many other materials can be reliably tested using this apparatus. The material to be tested (in sheet form) is placed on the anvil plate in the base with the impact tube fixed above. By removing the pin, a weight falls down the tube and strikes the punch at the bottom. This leaves an impact cone in the material and the diameter of the cone gives an indication of the material's hardness. Supplied complete with a selection of test pieces which can also be supplied separately.

Photon Energy Array Photon Energy Array Ref: 920-119
The Photon Energy Array provides seven clear envelope LEDs which give different wavelength light ranging from blue to infra-red. All the controls and monitoring points are provided for students to measure the threshold voltage for each wavelength or to plot the V/I characteristic for each LED. From the results a value of h Planck's constant can be deduced.

Cable Pulse System Cable Pulse System Ref: 280-222
The Cable Pulse System is a self-contained battery powered unit which connects to a 100m reel of TV coax cable. A 50ns pulse is sent along the cable every 10ms which can be displayed on an oscilloscope screen or PC 'scope monitor. The pulse reflects from the end of the cable and the time delay for the return pulse to be received is easily measured. The speed of the signal which is close to the speed of light can be calculated from the observations.

Photo detector Photo detector Ref: 280-209
Enclosed in a small plastic box measuring only 100 x 60 x 22mm this broad sensitivity detector provides a simple solution to showing that the electro-magnetic spectrum extends either side of the visible. The detector area is only 1mm dia so that it can be passed through the visible spectrum produced by a projector and prism. The output is monitored on a multimeter and gives measurable readings from 300nm to 1000nm demonstrating the presence of invisible UV and IR. Requires 9V battery (held inside the case) and multimeter with 200mV scale or similar (not included). Supplied with full instructions battery and specimen results.

Analogue to Digital Converter Analogue to Digital Converter Ref: 260-635
This unit will accept a d.c. analogue input in the range 0-7V and convert it into a digital output. As the input increases from zero in 1 volt steps the output LEDs give the input value in binary code up to the 3-bit maximum of 7 volts. The digital outputs are also available at the three 4mm sockets and sockets are also provided for the 0V and 12V supply lines so that a potential divider can be easily connected to provide the input. As an extra facility the sensitivity may be switched to 0-2V for use with smaller amplitude a.c. inputs. An external 12V d.c. supply is required.

Digital to Analogue Converter Digital to Analogue Converter Ref: 260-636
As an extension to the ADC above this unit will accept a 3-bit binary coded digital input and convert it into a 0-7V analogue output. Gain and Zero controls are provided so that the analogue steps can be adjusted to exactly 1V. Digital inputs can be provided by switches or by the ADC above and full instructions are supplied for connecting a sine wave input to the ADC and displaying it as a stepped analogue output from the DAC. If used on its own this unit requires an external 12V regulated supply such as the battery eliminator (order code 250-541). If used with the ADC above the same power source drives both units.

The active element in this unit is a hybrid sensor incorporating a bridge network. It is a fully sealed unit and can be used to monitor gases and non-corrosive liquids via a tube attached to the inlet. Pressures in the range 2 - 30 psi (0.01 to 0.21 MPa) give an output in the range 0 - 350mV. It interfaces directly with the instrumentation amplifier via the 4 pin data plug attached to a 50cm flying lead.
